This design features chamber overlap whereby the top notes of a lower chamber are duplicated by the lower notes of the adjacent upper chamber. The overlap reduces maximum note range of the instrument. However, Pacchioni's design has two distinct advantages:Chamber overlap provides for the player a greater number of options as to which chamber to use when playing a particular musical run, thereby resulting in smoother play by minimizing chamber switching. The potential for playing inter-chamber harmony, whereby the player blows through two chambers simultaneously, is enhanced. Good-sounding harmony, however, requires careful attention by the ocarina maker to tuning and chamber balance. The Cantata is specially tuned and balanced to produce excellent harmony results. One of the Cantata's key features affording excellent harmony is a strong lower end on the first chamber. That is, the lowest notes of the first chamber are not low-blow and quiet. This not only produces low-end first-chamber notes that are musically useful but minimizes the steepness of the breath pressure rise as one moves up the chamber. All of this makes possible the balancing of breath pressure across the first and second chambers, resulting in well-tuned harmony. The Cantata also allows good harmony between the second and third chambers for those expert players who are able to move the left hand down to cover the second chamber holes.1st chamber E4 to B5 (E4, F4, and F#4 are played by covering subholes) 2nd chamber G5 to D6 (subhole drops to F#5) 3rd chamber C6 to G6 (subhole drops to B5)All subholes are at the middle finger position.Excellent sounding fourths (quartal) harmony is easily done between 1st and 2nd chambers, or even between 2nd and 3rd chambers for experienced players. This particular ocarina was painted a mottled green with a mottled brown top face. Both colors are acrylic. An overlay of protective varnish was also applied. The photos show the actual ocarina to be purchased.
